The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications will be conducting a “national census” for all people and households living in Japan.

The national census is an important survey that can be used for various measures that are indispensable to your life, such as improving the living environment , disaster prevention plans and is held once every five years.

The results of the national Census will be used for measures such as city planning to make life easier for foreign residents.

The Census covers everyone that has lived or plans to live in Japan for more than three months, regardless of nationality.

Your responses will only be used to create statistics and will not be used in any way for immigration control, police investigations, or other such purposes.

In Japan, the structure of the domestic population and households has changed significantly in an era of rapid socio-economic changes. In order to formulate various plans of the national and local governments and to formulate and implement measures accurately, it is necessary to conduct surveys at intervals as short as possible so that the statistics used do not deviate from the actual situation. On the other hand, conducting a census at too short an interval would increase the burden on households and expenses, so the Statistical Law stipulates that a census should be conducted every five years.

Various statistics obtained from the census are for the future, such as regional promotion, livable urban development, disaster prevention measures, and welfare measures, in order to carry out the politics and administration of the national and local governments fairly and efficiently. In addition to being used to plan and promote various measures, it is an important one that is widely used in various fields such as academics and education. To this end, it is necessary to clarify the nature of people and households, such as kind of people kind of activities and how they live in Japan as a whole and in each region.

In the census, if you do not give an accurate answer, the statistics obtained will be inaccurate. If this happens, the various policies and future plans that are being formulated and implemented using the results of the census may go in the wrong direction, and the fairness and efficiency of the administration may be lost.
