The Advantage and Disadvantage of Online Class

As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic expanded worldwide, most
Japanese universities launched online learning as an emergent measure; hence, securing the quality of online learning remains a challenge. Over half of university students in Japan are willing to participate in interactive online lectures as many institutions delay the start of classes amid the coronavirus epidemic, a recent survey showed. The lessons are streamed live and professors can communicate with students via a monitor. Believe it or not, you will spend more time studying and completing assignments in the online environment than you will in an on-campus course. How can that be? The system, which allows the students to interact with each other remotely, is also introduced in seminars. Students’ evaluation of the online tools used in class was positive overall, which
promoted their participation and formed a positive perception of the class; for instance, they stated: “This class fully utilizes benefits of the online system” and “It is new and enjoyable to answer questions using Google Forms.” They “got accustomed to responding in different tools” as the class introduced new functions. According to Usui’s survey, 71.5 percent preferred lecture videos to be available on-demand, while 15.3 percent said they want to join live interactive classes. Another 13.2 percent wanted the lessons to be live but not interactive. The move came as 78.9 percent of nationwide higher education institutions delayed the start of their classes in the new academic year, which begins in April. While some said in the questionnaire they “look forward” to online lectures and that the practice “breaks from conventional mindsets,” a majority worried about whether they will be able to concentrate at home or hold active discussions with other students and lecturers. In an online course, no one can hear you scream. And that causes discomfort for some online students. The online environment is a much different atmosphere that takes some getting used to. Hopefully, your online instructor is sensitive to this problem and can help you overcome those feelings. In any case, you should be aware of them and seek help if they start to impede your studies. Only you are responsible for your learning. I can’t force it on you. I can’t make your study. I can share a little knowledge and experience, show you a few tools, and hope you get it. The spark and desire to pursue your dreams must be yours. So, in a philosophical sort of way, the real disadvantage to an Internet-based course is that you might not own up to it. You might not take responsibility for your studies and your goals. You might get way behind and never catch up.
